Synergy Building Training Workshop on Weather and Climate Information Dissemination in the Greater Horn of Africa

The Synergy Building Training Workshop on weather and climate information dissemination in the Greater Horn of Africa concluded Thursday, August 23, 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya. Organized by ICPAC-CONFER and NORCAP, the two-day event, held after the 68th Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (#GHACOF68), brought together 33 participants from media, meteorological agencies, and government departments. The workshop aimed to enhance the dissemination of weather and climate information, recognizing the crucial role of media in bridging the knowledge gap.

The training covered a range of topics essential for effective communication and partnership building. Participants delved into understanding recent climate extremes and their impacts, which is vital for accurate reporting and public awareness. Strategies for delivering joint campaigns were discussed, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in disseminating climate information.

A significant focus was placed on the role of media in disaster risk management. Participants learned about existing early warning tools within the region, which are crucial for timely and effective communication during climate-related disasters. The workshop also addressed the need to bridge gender gaps in climate services, ensuring that information reaches all segments of the population equitably.

One of the key outcomes of the workshop was the development of a regional work plan for stakeholder engagement. This plan aims to foster collaboration among various stakeholders, enhancing the overall effectiveness of climate information dissemination. Additionally, participants created a Seasonal Media Action Plan, a tool designed for seasonal planning and communication of weather and climate information.

The workshop culminated in the awarding of certificates to the participants, recognizing their commitment to improving climate information dissemination in the region. This training marks a significant step towards building a more informed and resilient Greater Horn of Africa, equipped to tackle the challenges posed by climate change.
